Valasara studied painting at the Art Institute of Indonesia, Yogyakarta. His artistic endeavors have been to question painting as an ideological practice by using canvas as a symbolic medium. Being of a Balinese descent he had to internalize traditional values and norms that are filled with symbols and stories, in the shape of artifacts, rituals, and myths. This shaped Valasara’s relationship with ideas of representational objects. Early in his practice he consciously avoided depicting visual identities, which had Balinese references. The intention was to allow space for him to question new meanings.
